So just what have they put their names down for this season? In a word, boots.
Without doubt, this is the season of the boot. Whatever the shape or finish - over-the-knee, mid-calf, high-heel, low-heel, Victorian lace-up, pointy-toe, ultra-shiny patent - as long as they are black, it seems that London women want boots and they want them now, thank you very much.
Price, it appears, is irrelevant.
How much do you want to pay?
Chanel’s black patent over-the-knee boots are a snip at ￡570, compared with Tom Ford’s tooled leather boots for YSL. They cost a breathtaking ￡2,635, and that’s if you can get hold of a pair - there are only 10 in the first delivery, and word is the waiting list is almost full. Cheaper, at ￡610, but just as difficult to buy, are lace-up boots from Louis Vuitton. The waiting list opened straight after the autumn 2001 show in Paris in March. By comparision, then, Gucci’s flat, black calf-length boots at ￡320 are a bargain. But hurry, the waiting list is getting longer each day, even though the first delivery is at the end of this month. On the other hand, if you have a yearning for crocodile skin, there are only two London women on the list for Gucci’s croc over-the-knee boots, so you might get a pair quicker.
There is, however, the small matter of the ￡6,165 price tag. A little out of your price range perhaps?

The latest arrival at Selfridges, which has the world’s largest luggage department, is the new Belgian label, 1 AM, which arrives in-store this month. Prices for weekend bags will start from ￡45 while a larger 1 AM Busy Backpack costs ￡99. The simple shapes are made of cordura, probably the strongest nylon available, and are water- and dust-repellent. Great attention is paid to the smallest details: shoulder straps with injected rubber anti-slip devices; reflectors invisible by day but evident in bad weather conditions.
Tumi is another name favoured by the globetrotting crowd. While some pieces are leather, the majority are US military-spec ballistic nylon with handles made from aircraft-grade aluminium. The best place to check out Tumi’s collection is at Harrods, where a state-of-the-art Wheelaway five-garment bag (with built-in extras like a laundry bag) will set you back ￡835.
Harrods says that Samsonite luggage accounts for between 30 and 50 per cent of sales and Selfridges also confirms Samsonite as its best-selling range. One of the most popular pieces is Sam-sonite’s Spark Jet Age, a cabin-sized 55cm trolley case costing ￡99.
New for this summer, is Samsonite’s Classic range of hard side luggage in glossy silver, black or red.
The cases have leather handles and hard-wearing exteriors coated with a scratch-resistant protective layer to with stand the usual battering by airport baggage-handling gorillas.
A Classic 74cm suitcase costs ￡469 at Selfridges. James Tanner, Selfridges’ luggage buyer, says: “Samsonite designs are streets ahead of other manufacturers. They look smart and are well priced. They’re also very well tested before shoppers even get to see them.”
While trolley cases are now generally overtaking hard suitcases, Samsonite’s Oyster 2, ￡105, still sells well. It’s the largest polypropylene case available, and it’s very light.
For business travellers, Tanner recommends the Valapak unisex suiter, ￡250, made by the US company Atlantic, which takes a dozen suits.
If you’re combining business with pleasure, Mulberry’s new Flight range is lightweight, multi-functional and almost everything-proof. All bags are made of high-spec materials with Mulberry’s distinctive signature styling and they look great as a set. The range includes a suit bag, ￡125, over-shoulder parachute bag, ￡95, satchel-style courier bag, ￡95, duffle-style kit bag, ￡95, and travel pouch, ￡49. The computer briefcase, ￡175, has space for a laptop, mobile phone and other paraphernalia, while the clipper bag, ￡75, has a pouch to fold the bag in to.
Mulberry also makes a Mobile Office, ￡395, which has a removable divider so you can pack clothes one side and office gear on the other. If you’re fretting about weight (and airlines are getting fiercer about hefty hand luggage), Anya Hind-march makes four classic pieces two duffles, two weekenders - which can be taken on board. Made of non-rip, industrial-strength nylon with a shoulder strap and leather trim, they cost from ￡175 to ￡395 at her Pont Street store. But the lightest bag we’ve found, and arguably the most sensible thing to pack if you intend to shop at your destination, is Le Sportsac’ s parachute nylon bag. The zippers lock together for security and it weighs just 550gm, including a zip-top pouch for the senior bag when not in use. It costs ￡70 at Selfridges.
